Commis Chef

We are seeking to appoint a Commis Chef to join a busy, award- winning team, working with fresh ingredients and achieving the highest standards. The ideal candidate will have NVQ Level 1 or equivalent and a basic food hygiene certificate, with experience in a commercial kitchen within a quality hospitality led venue. Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently in a pressurised environment are essential.

Madingley Hall is a beautiful venue set in expansive grounds, and just a few miles from Cambridge city centre. Parking is freely available to staff, and a bus service runs close by. There are currently around 150 staff working at the Institute, comprising a mix of academic, administrative, and hospitality-based roles.

As well as running its academic programmes, the Hall actively promotes wedding receptions, catering events, individual bed and breakfast accommodation and social events. At any one time there will be up to 180 short-term customers/students on the site, up to 84 short-term residents (one to five nights) and functions and events taking place (anything from concerts for 100, garden parties for 500, to wedding receptions and lectures).

The role-holder will be expected to work 5 variable days per week, with specific days determined by a rota system to cover the peak operational hours Monday to Sunday including a requirement to work split shifts. In return we offer a 10% split shift allowance, generous annual leave entitlements, training and development opportunities, an extensive employee benefits scheme and a contributory pension scheme.

The role-holder is required to uphold high standards of service delivery required by the business.

The successful candidate will be creative and passionate about food preparation and service, with a good knowledge of HACCP and COSHH systems. The ability to work under pressure is essential, and some experience of a commercial kitchen environment would be advantageous.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
