Research Associate (Fixed Term)

Department of Medicine, University of Cambridge

We are seeking to appoint a research associate to join Professor Sharon Peacock's and Dr Ewan Harrison's group in the Department of Medicine, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. The project aims to investigate the genetic basis of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to last resort antibiotics and the sharing of mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in Enterococcus faecium across the One Health continuum.

This position offers the opportunity to analyse long and short-read sequence data of E. faecium to understand the transmission of MGEs and ARGs between human and animal reservoirs, and to apply statistical methods to improve prediction of AMR. It offers the opportunity to work with established collaborators in Canada and the Wellcome Sanger Institute.

You will have excellent bioinformatic analysis skills with proven knowledge of the analysis of pathogen genome databases. Experience of genome-wide association studies, machine learning, or studies of mobile genetic elements in bacteria would be an advantage. A good publication record is essential. A desire to strive to create analyses that lead to findings that are relevant to improvements in human health is vital.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD, or an equivalent research doctorate. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once PhD has been awarded.
