Applications are invited for a 3-year Research Associate position funded by a donation from INIGO insurance to start in January/February 2025. The position will be based at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge in the Atmosphere-Ocean Dynamics group. This position will be supervised by Dr Alison Ming.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in atmospheric dynamics, and have or will soon be awarded a PhD in applied mathematics or a relevant area. Experience with theoretical frameworks, numerical models and specialist knowledge of the dynamical processes within the tropics and of tropical convection would be desirable.

The aim of the project is to better understand the influence of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) on tropical convection and more precisely whether the QBO can impact North Atlantic cyclone activity. The project will seek to understand the mechanisms of this stratosphere to troposphere coupling and how these might change under climate change.

The ability to work both as part of a team and independently, coupled with excellent communication, organisational and problem-solving skills are required. The duties / responsibilities of this post include developing and driving research objectives, writing up work for presentation and publication, collaborating with academic and industrial partners, assisting in the supervision of student research projects, and delivering seminars and occasional talks as outlined on the Further Information document.

Closing date for applications is Tuesday 12 November 2024.

Interviews are likely to be held on Friday 29 November 2024.
