Research Associate in Earth Sciences (Fixed Term)
We invite applications for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to join our team at the University of Cambridge to work on aspects of volatile cycling within the Solid Earth, in the present day and through deep time.
The project will focus on quantifying and modelling poorly-understood aspects of the deep carbon and sulfur cycles related to crustal sequestration by hydrothermal circulation in the oceanic crust, forearc processes, subduction and volcanic outgassing of carbon and sulfur. The project will involve a range of modelling approaches utilising combined thermodynamic and geodynamic models and plate tectonics reconstructions. There will be opportunities to acquire new data on carbon and sulfur isotopic composition of hydrothermal and volcanic gases using laser spectroscopy.
This project will be collaborative across multiple groups within the department. The successful applicant will require some knowledge of programming languages and will be willing to be trained in the operation of laboratory spectroscopy instrumentation. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences. Applicants will have experience in at least one, and ideally several of the following: plate tectonics reconstructions, box modelling of volatile cycling in Earth, strong petrological skills and a broad geochemical and thermodynamic background. Excellent communication and collaboration skills are essential, alongside a strong publication record (commensurate with their career stage) and an ability to work collaboratively.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance.
Earliest start date: January 2025
